American Flag Dessert

American Flag Graham Crackers

Make an American Flag for Dessert!

Great for Fourth of July or Memorial Day!

The kids found a picture of a cake decorated with strawberries and blueberries for the 4th of July.  They have been asking me for days if we could make one.  So we created our own American Flag for dessert.

We try to limit sugar for the kids (they have PLENTY of natural energy), I decided to try and HEALTHY it up a bit using graham crackers and whipped cream instead of cake and icing.

My boys love to help make things in the kitchen, and this recipe is excellent as kids can help with every step and then eat what they make.

American Flag Graham Crackers

American Flag Graham Crackers are also an excellent preschool craft for the Holidays.

If you check out our photos, my two ½-year-old is working on some of his fine motor skills.  Using a butter knife to spread the whipped cream across the graham cracker and picking up the tiny slices of strawberries really helps to develop those skills.   This activity also helps to develop spatial awareness and observation skills, as he is copying what I did.

Ingredients for American Flag Desserts::

  • 4 Graham Crackers
  • Whipped cream (we make our own using 1 cup heavy whipping cream and one tablespoon of sugar)
  • 5-8 Strawberries depending on size
  • 24 Blueberries (6 for each graham cracker)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the kids really help make these?

That is the best part! Little hands can spread the whipped cream, count out 6 blueberries for the corner and lay the strawberry stripes. It is a fun (and sneaky-healthy) 4th of July activity.

Can I make these ahead of time?

These are best assembled right before serving, the graham crackers soften once the whipped cream sits on them. You can slice the strawberries ahead so assembly takes just minutes.

What can I use instead of whipped cream?

Cream cheese frosting, vanilla yogurt or whipped coconut cream all work as the white base. Yogurt makes it a perfectly acceptable breakfast, we will not tell.
